About Us
It takes a village to raise a child. We take that sentence literally. The Austrian education system faces great opportunities and challenges. Early childhood settings and schools carry a substantial responsibility. But children’s opportunities also depend on their families, their neighbourhoods and the wider conditions in which they grow up.
Children learn in their families, in the neighbourhood, in clubs, in the library, at the youth centre and anywhere adults take time for them. Our work in early literacy has shown us how much individual initiatives can achieve. When organisations know one another, pursue shared goals and exchange knowledge, they can build on that work and coordinate their contributions.
For us, education has three interconnected dimensions. The first is physical well-being: health, nutrition, movement and a safe environment in which children can grow up well. The second is knowledge and skills: reading, arithmetic, languages, science, art and craft, everything that helps people understand and shape their world. The third is character: honesty, compassion, reliability and the willingness to take responsibility for others. We are convinced that all people have the potential to make a difference, regardless of education, age, background or gender, and that we develop most fully through contributing to the lives of others. No single institution can cover all three dimensions alone. Together, it can be done.
Across Austria, people and organisations in civil society, business, culture and research are committed to education. Yet they often know little about one another’s work. We connect them and help them develop joint initiatives. We support public administration, foundations, businesses and organisations in developing and implementing education projects, we build networks, and we work with families and neighbourhoods. Step by step, many separate programmes and activities become the village every child needs.
